Maternal Well-being, Infant Feeding and Return to Paid Work

Wednesday 17th April 2024, 1:00pm

The Stefan Cross Centre for Women, Equality and Law invites you to a lunchtime seminar.

Professors Grace James and Sarah Jewell from the University of Reading discuss their Nuffield Foundation funded research project investigating maternal wellbeing and return to work/infant feeding choices.

Their early findings reveal how the lived realities of women returning to work following maternity/parental leave can often challenge, and be challenged by, their infant feeding choices, suggesting a need for greater awareness of their experiences, clearer policies and more sympathetic practices for women in the workplace.

Grace James is Professor of Law at the University of Reading. Her research focuses on the legal regulation of working families and she has published widely in this area (and others). She is the co-author, with Nicole Busby, of A History of Regulating Working Families: Strains, Stereotypes, Strategies and Solutions (Hart Publishing, 2020). Grace is a co-investigator on the Nuffield Foundation funded ‘Maternal Well-being, Infant Feeding and Return to Paid Work’ Project).

Sarah Jewell is Professor of Economics at the University of Reading. Her research interests lie in the field of labour economics focusing on gender inequality and women's health in the workplace. She is the principal investigator on the Nuffield Foundation funded  ‘Maternal Well-being, Infant Feeding and Return to Paid Work’  project.
