The Exploration and Prospect of Food Security Cooperation between China and European Countries-Seminar

Wednesday 7th February 2024, 3:00pm

We would like to invite you to a seminar on ‘The Exploration and Prospect of Food Security Cooperation between China and European Countries’ by a visiting scholar from China, Yao Zhang.

Food security is a challenge for every country in the world and is one of the most important global issues which also links to many other challenges such as climate change, conflict, and biodiversity loss. In order to be food secure, countries need to not only consider domestic production but also the role of trade and trading and customs relationships. European countries, especially those in Western Europe, have high food safety standards, and rich experience in dealing with food security issues, although they are increasingly suffering from malnutrition in the form of obesity and a lack of key vitamins. China and European countries have huge potential in food security cooperation through trade which could benefit both countries economically and in terms of food security. A comparative study of how food security is achieved in the two regions will have relevance for both regions and as well as the rest of the world due to the importance of these regions in establishing trading relationships and standards. During Yao’s study in the UK, he will study the opportunities and challenges of food security between China and Europe. In this talk, he will focus on his initial work in analysing the current situation and trends of the international meat trade in recent years and discuss the possibility of strengthening meat security cooperation between China and European Countries.
