EDI Symposium: Reflections on Race Equality and Bridging the Gap: Harnessing Student Voice

Join our three-day EDI Symposium from 23rd to 25th April, an essential platform for enhancing Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion at our university. The symposium will address key themes such as race equality, mental health, disability inclusion, and social mobility.

Day One:

11:00 AM - 11:45 AM: Opening Remarks and Reflections on Race Equality Action Plan 

Overview and discussion on progress, challenges, and future steps in some of our race equality initiatives. 

About Jane: Jane Falkingham, Professor of Demography & International Social Policy at the University of Southampton and Vice President (International & Global Engagement), is the EDI sponsor for the university. As Director of the ESRC Centre for Population Change, she focuses on global population dynamics and social policy. An acclaimed author with over 200 publications, Professor Falkingham is deeply engaged in research and advocacy. She recently hosted an event with the Rt Hon Justine Greening, centred on 'inspiring inclusion' in alignment with International Women's Day.

About Kieron: Kieron Broadhead, Senior Executive Director for Students & Infrastructure and Deputy Vice President Operations at the University of Southampton, is the Race Equality Charter sponsor, reflecting his deep commitment to diversity and inclusivity in higher education. In his current role, Kieron oversees all non-academic student-facing operations at the university. His experience across various higher education institutions has fostered a keen interest in ensuring strategic coherence in student-facing activities, particularly in supporting the diverse needs of different student groups.

11:45 AM - 12:30 PM: Bridging the Gap: Harnessing student voice to accelerate race equity and social justice 

This session will explore how the University’s Awarding Gap Project has delivered student led, staff supported activity to increase belonging and inclusion for the Black student community.

About Savanna: Savanna Cutts, the Student Inclusion Manager in Widening Participation and Social Mobility at Southampton, is dedicated to supporting underrepresented students in higher education. As the co-founder and co-chair of the University's Social Mobility Network, she focuses on creating a supportive environment for students and staff from low socioeconomic or working-class backgrounds, and those who are the first in their family to attend university. An alumna with a Law degree from Southampton, Savanna brings personal experience to her role in fostering inclusivity.
